Our Story
Bear Necessities (BNC) was founded on June 3rd, 2014 by two dedicated and inspiring sisters, Leah and Alexa Villanueva. After working downtown for a significant amount of time, the sisters became more aware of how aggressive the issues of local homelessness is in Calgary. Taking initiative, Leah and Alexa formed Bear Necessities under the University of Calgary's Student Union Club in hopes of developing an organization that offers support for the less fortunate, community engagment opportunities for students and like-minded people, as well as spreading awareness to supress the negative stigma behind homelessness.

What our Organization Offers
SUPPORT
ENGAGEMENT
AWARENESS

Bear Necessities (BNC) supports a variety of local nonprofit organizations. Working with the Drop-In Centre, Leftovers Foundation, The Mustard Seed, and Father Lacombe High School, we provide monetary donations, clothing, consumables, and volunteers to support ending local homelessness.
Our mission is to engage the campus community, educate them about local homelessness, and provide them with opportunities to become more involved in the community. Offering volunteer hours to the public, particularly students, BNC continues to be strong advocates for community service.
Bear Necessities targets the public's level of understanding and implications surrounding
homelessness. By promoting awareness, BNC is able to dispel myths and initiate positive change on complex issues.
